Free Academic Licensing

About Academic Licensing

Many universities and other academic institutions around the world use LimitState software. We offer free unsupported licences to universities and other academic institutions when using our software* exclusively for teaching or research purposes.

Each time the software is used on your university network, a new 30-day license will be issued by our server. This means that you can use it for up to 30 days away from your University network (e.g. if you take your laptop home).

Our software automatically recognises academic networks (click the button above to test it). If your academic network is not recognised, please contact us, including in your email the full text displayed on the academic test page from the computer you wish to use the software on.

A Note for Macintosh Users with Sequoia

For academic users with a Macintosh running Sequoia, the MAC address information that is provided to our academic license servers may be randomized, leading to the academic license not working (“-4, Wrong host for license”). To remedy this:

  1.  Open Finder > Applications > LimitState > [APPNAME] > Right click [APPNAME] > Show Package Contents

  2. Go to Mac OS > [APPNAME] > license

  3. Delete your academic license (AcademicLicense.lic)

  4. Navigate to System Settings > Wi-Fi.

  5. Choose the specific Wi-Fi network where you want to disable MAC randomization.

  6. Find the option labelled "Private Wi-Fi Address" and set it to "Off".

  7. Try running the software with an academic license once more
